Dressing for work in Australia

  • Working as an intern means that you will be representing the company and you will be the 'face' of the company. Therefore, it is important to understand what the dress codes are in order to avoid any necessary inconveniences. Some companies will provide you with uniforms, but if uniforms are not provided, you may want to ask your employer about the dress codes so that you know exactly what is expected of you dress wise. To give you a rough idea about what you may expect, here is a brief outline of the general dress code in work places around Australia:
  • Dress for the job (you must follow the dress code set out by the company that you will be working for as an intern. Men usually are required to wear dark business suits and a tie. Women are usually required to wear a conservative business styled dress, blouse or skirts).
  • Dressing for formal occasions (there may be occasions where you are required to attend a formal event for the company. For these kind of occasions, women may be required to wear formal dresses. Dress conservatively, but don't under-dress either. Remember, you are there to represent your company).
  • Dressing for informal events (Casual dresses and pants for women and casual pants and shirts for men may be appropriate when you are attending an informal, non business event where your fellow colleagues and managers may be present. Dress conservatively but don't over-dress either or you may risk feeling and looking out of place).
